Gold Wedding Bands

18K gold…14K gold…10K gold? Which one is the best?
“Could you tell me what the difference is between 18K and 14K gold? Does one wear better than another? Isn't one softer? I'm not sure which I should choose.”

We’re often asked questions like these and hope the following information will help you make the best choice for your wedding bands.

Pure gold, also referred to as 24 karat or 24K, has many unique and desirable characteristics that make it valuable. For instance, it doesn’t tarnish, it is non-allergenic, it is very malleable/workable, it polishes to a mirror-like shine, it is rare, and it is highly valued in every country in the world. However, it is very soft and pliable in its pure 24K state and is generally considered to be unsuitable for wedding bands and other jewelry. As a result, e-wedding bands doesn’t offer wedding bands made from 24K gold.

In order to make gold jewelry that is durable and long lasting, gold is combined with other metals--called alloys--to make it stronger and change its color. Alloys add strength, but dilute the value of the gold and may cause jewelry items to eventually tarnish and/or cause allergic reactions. In an attempt to achieve the best balance between the strength of alloys and the valuable and desirable properties of gold, three different karat gold combinations have become standard: 18K, 14K, and 10K. All three of these karat golds are available in white gold or yellow gold. White gold alloys are typically stronger than yellow gold alloys, so a white gold ring will be slightly stronger and last a little longer than a yellow gold ring. E-wedding bands offers many wedding band styles that are available in all three karat gold combinations so you can choose the style you want in the metal you want!

18K Gold Wedding Bands contain 75% gold and 25% alloy. 18K gold is the softest and purist of these three karat golds and is the most expensive because of its high gold content. It is typically used in higher-end jewelry such as fancy diamond rings or where a richer yellow color is desired. For instance, when combined with platinum it can create a stunning and contrasting two-tone look. It is the most resistant to tarnishing of the three karat golds, and although it is the softest, it is still hard enough to be used for rings and wedding bands. 18K gold wedding bands will show wear marks sooner and wear out slightly faster than 14K and 10K gold bands, but they are still the preferred choice of those wanting something a little finer.

14K Gold Wedding Bands contain 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy. 14K gold is generally considered to be the ideal karat gold for rings and wedding bands because it is strong yet will not easily tarnish. Probably 90% of all the gold engagement rings and wedding bands sold in the United States--whether yellow gold or white gold--are made with 14K gold. It still has a good yellow color for those wanting yellow bands instead of white, and when choosing the best karat gold for wedding bands based on all-around beauty and practicality, 14K gold can’t be beat.

10K Gold Wedding Bands contain 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy. 10K gold is the only karat gold that contains more alloy than gold. 10K gold wedding bands are typically requested by individuals looking for a slight discount from 14K gold prices. It is the least pure and therefore the least expensive of the three karat golds and is the preferred metal for class rings and other jewelry pieces where a lower cost is desired. It will tarnish more quickly than 18K and 14K gold jewelry, and 10K yellow gold jewelry items are slightly more pale in color than 14K yellow gold jewelry items. 10K gold is generally considered to be harder than 14K, but there is much unresolved discussion within the jewelry industry about whether or not it actually wears longer than 14K.

With the internet making it possible to buy gold jewelry from anywhere in the world, many manufacturers are now using international gold marks to show the purity of their gold jewelry items. In these cases, the fineness of the precious metal content is expressed in parts-per-thousand. This marking system is universally recognized, is actually more accurate, and we have listed the applicable marks here along with their corresponding karat marks:

24K = .999
18K = .750
14K = .585
10K = .417
We mark certain bands with these marks, so if you receive a ring from e-Wedding Bands with an international marking stamp inside, rest assured that the quality is the best available!

White Gold Rings and Rhodium Plating
Because white gold is made from yellow gold and various alloys, white gold in it's natural state has a slight yellow tint. It's not a true white metal like platinum or silver. To enhance the whiteness of white gold jewelry, and no matter where you purchase white gold jewelry, it has become standard in the jewelry industry to plate (or cover) white gold jewelry with another metal called Rhodium. Rhodium is very white, reflective, extremely hard and virtually tarnish free, so it's the perfect protective coating for a white gold ring.

This Rhodium coating may eventually wear off and need to be re-applied through a simple re-plating process, if the bright, whiter look is desired for the piece of jewelry. As a service to our customers, e-Wedding Bands offers free Rhodium plating for the life of your white gold ring! You only need to cover the shipping charges back and forth, and we will re-plate the ring as often as you'd like. Or, many local jewelers will do Rhodium plating for a small fee.

We have received many inquiries about how often the re-plating process will be needed, but that depends completely on the amount of normal wear to the jewelry item. It could be needed as often as every 6 months, or as seldom as every 5 years. The Rhodium coating wears off gradually and many people end up loving their rings with the natural white gold look.

What do we wear? We even polled our own employees to see what they chose: Of those who have gold rings, approximately 10% chose 18K Gold and 90% chose 14K Gold.

(Some of our employees are single and don’t wear wedding bands, and we didn’t count the ones who chose platinum, titanium, or tungsten carbide!)

We hope this information will help you with your decision, but if you have additional questions please feel free to call and speak to one of our knowledgeable sales staff—we’ll help you choose the perfect ring!

Platinum Wedding Bands

All e- Wedding Bands platinum bands are SOLID (not hollow) 95% pure platinum and 5% ruthenium. This particular platinum/ruthenium alloy combination -- generally referred to as PLAT or PT950 -- is the highest purity available in platinum bands. Platinum wedding bands made with ruthenium are harder and more durable than platinum wedding bands made with iridium. In addition, all of our platinum bands are made from the highest quality seamless tubing with the exception of a few of our Unique and hand-woven or braided styles.

All of our Platinum Wedding Bands are stamped with either PLAT or PT950, both of which indicate pure PT950 quality as required by the FTC. We strictly follow guidelines set by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Title 16, sec. 23.7 which states: (1) "The following abbreviations...may be used for quality marks on articles: "Plat." or "Pt." for Platinum. (2) An industry product consisting of at least 950 parts per thousand platinum may be marked or described as "Platinum." We want you to be 100% confident in ordering from us and knowing that you are receiving true PT950 platinum!

When deciding on the best precious metal for your wedding band, we would like to give you some information regarding different types of metals. We have received valuable feedback from our customers in the past and we would like to share that feedback with you.

How does Platinum differ from White Gold?
Unlike white gold, which is pure yellow gold mixed with alloys that overpower the yellow color and create an almost white color, Platinum is naturally white. Platinum is very durable and typically outlasts gold by many years. Platinum is also one of the heaviest metals, weighing almost 60% more than 14K gold. This property gives platinum jewelry the substantial feel that many people prefer. However, care and maintenance of Platinum is a bit more demanding than gold is. Read more about the maintenance of Platinum below. The Platinum offered by e- Wedding Bands is 95% (PT950) pure. White Gold is 75% pure (18K) or 58.3% pure (14K) and is combined with nickel and copper alloys.

How durable is Platinum and why does e-Wedding bands sell 95% pure Platinum (marked PLAT or PT950) and not 100% pure Platinum?
Platinum in its pure form is relatively soft. When alloyed with Ruthenium, however, it is extremely strong and malleable. If we were to offer 100% pure Platinum, your ring would bend and scratch far more easily than PT950 Platinum does. The stamp of PLAT* or PT950 on your ring is your guarantee that it is truly 95% pure. Some jewelers offer PT900 platinum which is no stronger and contains less platinum. We encourage you to be careful with PT900 as some jewelers use it to increase their profit by selling a customer inferior metal, and thus providing a lower value.

Why is Platinum more expensive than Gold?
Platinum is mined primarily in Russia where the unstable political and economic climate has led Russia to restrict the export of Platinum. As a result, prices are typically higher than gold. Platinum is a rare metal that today requires the processing of nearly 10 tons of ore for one ounce of Platinum. In comparison, Gold requires only 3-4 tons of raw rock for the same yield. There are also fewer Platinum mines. For every 10 Gold mines there is only one Platinum mine.

How do I care for and maintain Platinum?
No jewelry is completely resistant to scratches, and Platinum is no exception. Often times Platinum loses its new look a bit more rapidly than gold, but with proper care can retain its new look. Unlike Gold which is easily restored to a like-new appearance with just a few minutes of polishing and cleaning, Platinum is more difficult to polish and refinish than gold. The result is that Platinum is very beautiful when maintained, but maintaining it can be a bit more time-consuming and costly than gold.

A brief history of Platinum
The first Platinum processing techniques date to Ancient Egypt in 700 BC. Platinum was not widely used in jewelry design until the 18th century. From 1901-1940 Platinum was the metal of choice, lending its unique luster to classic Deco and Art Nouveau designs. In 1940, during World War II, Platinum was placed on the strategic metals list. This prohibited its use in jewelry fabrication and White Gold became the white metal of choice. After its removal from the restricted metals list, Platinum found widespread use in the electronics and automobile industries. By the late 1980s Platinum had begun its resurgence in fine jewelry.

Titanium Wedding Bands

All e- Wedding band Titanium wedding bands are made from high Aircraft Grade (6AL/4V) Titanium unless specified otherwise to provide our customers the highest quality.

Titanium's unique properties make it an excellent choice for a wedding band, although it's very different than gold or platinum. It’s a very lightweight metal, almost like aluminum, weighing only 1/3 as much as gold! Many people prefer this light feel because they hardly notice they are wearing a titanium ring at all! Its grayish color is close to white, but a few shades darker than platinum and white gold, more like the color of stainless steel, or gun-metal gray.

Titanium is often marketed as being scratch-resistant, but our experience shows that with normal wear, titanium wedding bands will quickly begin to show small scrapes and scratches just like gold and platinum wedding bands. Although titanium is a very hard and durable metal, it can still be scratched by abrasive materials like rocks, sandpaper, and even hardened steel tools and utensils. The good news is that any jeweler in your area should be able to make your titanium ring look new again with a little polishing. Titanium rings look great and have a nice shine when they have been polished! Due to the incredible strength and durability of titanium, it is difficult to cut and shape compared to gold, silver and platinum. Because of this unique nature, re-sizing these rings is nearly impossible; therefore, great care must be taken when sizing your finger. It is possible to slightly increase a titanium ring's size by removing a small amount of material from the inside surface, but it isn't possible to make it smaller.

Titanium is not a rare or precious metal, it is readily available to those who want to use it in any industry. Most of the cost in making a titanium ring is in the skilled labor to craft the ring from such a hard metal. All of our titanium wedding rings are made from high grade aircraft titanium to provide our customers the highest quality. Titanium rings are constructed from solid bars of titanium, which results in a perfectly seamless ring. Titanium will not irritate or discolor your skin and will not harm the body in any way. Titanium is used in the medical and dental fields in surgical implants, bone screws, hip replacements, heart valves and more. Titanium rings are superior in durability to precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum (as you might guess from its uses in the aerospace and medical fields). A Titanium ring may long outlive the wearer.

Black Titanium Wedding Bands: What is Black Titanium?
Natural titanium is grayish in color and, when alloyed with specific metals to increase its strength, has recently become a popular choice for wedding bands. The light weight of titanium and the grayish color appeals to many people, as well as the incredible strength and hypoallergenic properties. Under carefully controlled manufacturing conditions and using a special titanium alloy, the exterior surface color of naturally gray titanium wedding bands can be permanently changed to a rich and luxurious black. This color is not a paint or coating that is applied to outside surface after the wedding band is finished, but it actually forms on the titanium wedding band during part of the manufacturing and treatment process.

The proprietary alloy needed to achieve this great look is used exclusively by the Spectore Corporation and is trademarked as Black-Ti™ . Several other manufacturers have tried to produce comparable black titanium wedding bands, but have had poor results. We have tested some of those products and found that the black color is only on the surface and eventually scratches off, revealing the gray titanium underneath. Our Black-Ti™ titanium wedding bands are the only true black titanium wedding bands that are impervious to typical wear and scratching and are guaranteed to stay black forever.

Can a Titanium ring be cut off?

Yes! Please be aware that in any situation where it might become necessary to cut off a Titanium ring - for instance excessive weight gain, hand injury, etc., - cutting through titanium will be more difficult than cutting through gold or platinum. However, it can still be done. In our own jewelry shop, we used a separating disc and flexible shaft tool-items commonly found in nearly all jewelry shops that work with gold, silver, and platinum--to cut through one of our 5mm domed and comfort fit titanium rings. Cutting it all the way through took only 20 seconds. Next, we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to cut off a titanium ring in an emergency. Most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and ours assured us that it would be no problem for them.

During our 30+ years of jewelry repair experience, we've only seen a dozen or so rings that have been cut off in hospital emergency rooms, and in most of those cases the rings had been bent out-of-round and were putting painful pressure on the finger. Titanium rings are less likely to crush or bend out-of-round, so if you shut your hand in a car door or drop a heavy object on it, it might be safer to be wearing a titanium ring than a precious metal band! Nonetheless, if you ever need your Titanium ring cut off, just contact a local jeweler that uses separating discs. Please check with your local medical facility if you have concerns.

Tungsten Wedding Bands

We are excited to be offering the finest quality tungsten wedding bands at prices that are surprisingly low—sometimes less than half the price charged in jewelry stores. However, don’t confuse our low prices with inferior quality! All of our e- Wedding Bands tungsten carbide rings are made with the superior nickel-binder alloy instead of being made from pure tungsten or with the cobalt-binder alloy. Nickel-binder alloys are superior for several reasons:

Nickel-binder tungsten carbide is hypoallergenic, chemically inert and therefore will not oxidize, cause rashes, or irritate the skin.
We do not use cobalt as it can have an adverse reaction with the wearer’s skin, sometimes causing a rash.
Cobalt bonds with oils in the skin and leeches out of the ring resulting in oxidation. The oxidation appears similar to tarnished sliver, but cannot be removed by polishing or grinding. Nickel, on the other hand, does not bond with oil and therefore does not oxidize.
Many jewelers offer pure tungsten wedding bands which lack the hardness of tungsten carbide and can scratch quite easily. Some offer tungsten rings made with cobalt binder because it is cheaper to produce than nickel-binder carbide. We caution you against buying from a jeweler that doesn't specify that their tungsten wedding bands are made with the nickel binder alloy. Many stores don't list which alloy they are selling because they don't know which alloy they are selling. If they don't know, it is most likely cobalt alloy or pure tungsten which are cheaper and inferior to the nickel binder tungsten carbide wedding bands.

What is Tungsten Carbide?
Tungsten is a very hard and dense metal, mined from Wolframite ore and symbolized by a (W) on the periodic table of elements. It melts at an extraordinary 6,100 degrees Fahrenheit–the highest melting point of all metals. On its own, tungsten is vulnerable to scratches and damage just like any other metal, such as titanium and steel. Tungsten does not gain its extreme hardness until it is combined with a carbon alloy, transferring it into tungsten carbide (WC) with a hardness between 8.5 and 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Tungsten carbide is four times harder than titanium, twice as hard as steel, is virtually unscratchable, and has been widely used for decades in industrial applications such as cutting tools, mining machinery, and rocket engine nozzles.

The unique formula of our tungsten carbide allows these rings to be both visually stunning and durable enough for every-day use. You are no longer required to constantly remove and replace your ring in order to protect its finish.

What is Black Tungsten?
With its rich color, lustrous shine, and sleek new designs, black tungsten is the hottest new look in tungsten wedding bands and is proving to be a popular choice for brides and grooms wanting wedding bands that express their individuality.

Tungsten carbide is naturally grayish in color, and because of its extreme hardness is a perfect base metal for physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings. Under carefully controlled manufacturing conditions, and using this special process, the exterior surface color of naturally gray tungsten carbide wedding bands can be permanently changed to a rich and luxurious black. The interior is also coated except for a very thin line used for metal identification. The PVD coating on our Black Tungsten wedding bands not only produces a handsome wedding band that is similar to the color of onyx, but it improves the material properties of these wedding bands by extending their service life through high wear resistance and low surface friction. We have tested these Black Tungsten wedding bands for over a year now, and found that they are resistant to typical wear and scratching. Just like all of our other tungsten carbide wedding bands, sizing exchanges are free except for postage.

Can Tungsten Carbide Rings ever scratch?
Tungsten carbide can only be scratched or damaged by extreme measures, like abrasion from diamonds or corundum. Consequently, activities that would normally require the removal of conventional wedding bands for their protection can be performed without concern by the wearer of a tungsten carbide wedding band. While extremely strong and scratch-resistant, Tungsten carbide is a bit more brittle than traditional metals used in wedding bands. Fortunately, our outstanding warranty covers even the unlikely event of your tungsten carbide ring chipping or breaking! In addition, we warrantee the sizing, polish, and texture of our tungsten carbide wedding bands for life. If an e- Wedding Bands tungsten carbide wedding band ever needs to be exchanged for a different size, repolished, re-textured, or replaced because of chipping or breakage, all that is required is a copy of the original receipt and the ring. You will only be charged for return shipping and handling.

All of our tungsten carbide wedding bands are comfort-fit style, providing optimal comfort while wearing the ring and when putting it on or removing it. Because our tungsten carbide wedding bands are engineered to be maintenance free, we offer a lifetime warranty*.

e - Wedding Bands combines traditional precious metals with tungsten carbide to create a unique piece of jewelry with a style, polish, and texture that will last a lifetime. We offer tungsten carbide wedding bands with precious metal inlays of Sterling Silver, Platinum, Rose Gold, White Gold, and Yellow Gold. The tungsten carbide portion of the ring will maintain its original polish and luster for life, while the softer inlaid precious metals will eventually develop a textured appearance over time, creating an attractive contrast against the lasting polish of the tungsten carbide.

Can a Tungsten ring be cut off?
Can a Tungsten ring be cut off?
Yes! Please be aware that in any situation where there might be a medical necessity to cut off or remove a tungsten ring--for instance excessive weight gain, hand injury, etc.,--removing a tungsten ring doesn’t pose much more of a challenge than cutting through a gold or platinum wedding band. In our own jewelry shop, as in many other jewelry shops, we have a cutting tool designed for cutting titanium and tungsten wedding bands. In addition, tungsten bands can be fractured into pieces using vise-grip pliers. When we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to remove tungsten wedding bands in an emergency, they told us that most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and assured us that it would be no problem for them.

During our 30 years of jewelry repair experience, we've only seen a dozen or so rings that have been cut off in hospital emergency rooms, and in most of those cases the rings had been bent out-of-round and were putting painful pressure on the finger. Tungsten rings will not crush or bend out-of-round, so if you shut your hand in a car door or drop a heavy object on it, a tungsten wedding band is likely to fracture into several pieces and fall off your finger freely. You might be safer wearing a tungsten ring than a precious metal band! Nonetheless, check with your local jeweler or medical facility if you have concerns.

Sizing and Engraving
Because of the extreme hardness and durability of tungsten, tungsten wedding bands cannot be sized like gold, silver or platinum rings, so please take extra care in determining the proper size. Also, engraving a tungsten wedding band is possible but it is very faint and difficult to read. Because of this, we have chosen not to offer engraving on Tungsten rings.

*Warranty
e- Wedding Bands offers the best tungsten ring warranty available! Our tungsten carbide rings are engineered to be maintenance free, and we provide a lifetime warranty on the sizing, polish, textures, and against breakage. Under normal usage there will be little or no wear on both the polish and the textures of the tungsten carbide. Precious metal inlay material is excluded and is designed to exhibit a contrasting textured appearance after normal wear.

Our tungsten ring warranty includes lifetime ring size exchanges (tungsten carbide wedding bands cannot be resized conventionally due to their extreme hardness) plus we warrantee the polish and texture of our tungsten carbide wedding bands for life. If an e- Wedding Bands tungsten carbide wedding band ever needs to be re-polished, refinished, exchanged for sizing, or replaced due to fracture or breakage, all that is required is to return the ring with a copy of the original receipt, plus $35 for handling and return shipping. For inlaid tungsten bands, there is a small deductible depending on your inlaid metal: Sterling silver inlays require a deductible of $75 per ring. 14K and 18K gold inlays run $85 per ring, and platinum inlays are $135 per ring.

Please Note: Tungsten carbide rings are not indestructible. Therefore, e- Wedding Bands will void the warranty if a ring is altered in any way, including engraving, sizing, drilling, stone setting, polishing, boiling, cleaning with harsh chemicals, soldering, burning or showing evidence of obvious repeated physical abuse, such as striking with a hammer.

Palladium Wedding Bands

All of the palladium wedding bands from e-Wedding Bands contain 95% palladium and 5% ruthenium, a combination of two of the precious metals from the Platinum Group Metals*. This combination is referred to as 950 palladium or PD950. Palladium is one of the relatively unknown “sister” metals of platinum and shares many of the same unique characteristics and physical properties of platinum: both are naturally white precious metals, strong, non-tarnishing, and hypoallergenic. They are equally rare and are mined together in less than a half-dozen regions around the world.Palladium was first used for jewelry when platinum was declared a strategic metal and reserved for military use in 1939. Since then, palladium has been the metal of choice for diamond setters. But with the formulation of newly developed 950 palladium alloys, palladium is now a smart choice for engagement rings and wedding bands.

Why Palladium instead of White Gold?
The weight of 950 palladium wedding bands is very close to that of 14k white gold wedding bands. However, palladium wedding bands will stay white forever, never needing the “renewed whitening” from rhodium plating that white gold requires. Palladium wedding bands are the perfect choice for those with sensitivity to nickel because they are nickel free and hypoallergenic - unlike white gold wedding bands. Palladium is an extremely rare metal, much more so than gold. It is one of the whitest of all metals and consequently yields wedding bands of extraordinary and uncommon beauty. Plus, palladium wedding bands are incredibly durable and virtually tarnish proof.

White gold is not a true white metal like platinum or palladium. It is made by mixing pure yellow gold with other white metals like zinc and nickel to change its color to white. As a result, it usually has a slight yellowish tint. To enhance the whiteness of white gold jewelry it is electroplated with another precious metal called rhodium. Rhodium is very white, reflective, extremely hard and virtually tarnish free, so it's the perfect protective coating for a white gold ring. However, rhodium coatings wear off gradually. Many people choose to have their rings re-plated with rhodium. Others love their rings with the natural not-quite-white look of white gold.

How does Palladium compare to Platinum?
In virtually all jewelry circles, platinum is still considered to be the king of metals. Platinum wedding bands are approximately 60%-70% heavier than gold or palladium wedding bands. They are extremely durable and will last much longer than comparable gold wedding bands Plus, a high world-wide demand for platinum has driven prices much higher in recent months, making platinum wedding bands a great investment. Even the name Platinum denotes the highest standard available.

So why choose palladium?
If your budget allows, platinum is still the king of all metals. However, palladium offers many of the same desirable characteristics of platinum at a much lower price. It is equally as white as platinum and whiter than white gold. Palladium is hypoallergenic, never needs rhodium plating, and is more precious than white gold. And, as a Platinum Group Metal, palladium wedding bands provide wearers with the same durability and premium white beauty that platinum wearers have learned to treasure. But perhaps the best part is that palladium wedding bands offer a pricing choice right between white gold wedding bands and platinum wedding bands.
